The historical gallery of
the Scurry
County Museum features a chronological look at Scurry County and West
Texas from the times of the nomadic Indians through the oil productions
of today. Exhibits in the permanent gallery of the Museum
trace
the area's colorful past.
Nomadic Indian tribes, military expeditions, and
buffalo hunters left their mark and provided a lasting legacy for the
region. Hunters followed the great buffalo herds into the
region,
and they were followed by cattleman. Ranchers and cowboys
maintain a high profile today. Farmers followed the cattlemen
and
broke sod for the crops that now play a signigicant role today.
Oil men discovered a major oil field in 1948 in Scurry County, and in
1978, the area celebrated the production of the billionth barrel of oil
fron the Canyon Reef formation. Oil continues to be a major
source of income for some area residents.
Ranching, cotton farming and processing, and prison work also afford
ways to make a living in this area.
Two
galleries change every few months. Please come back and visit soon to
