The
Scurry County Museum was formed in April 1970. By-Laws were prepared,
and trustees were appointed. Initial funding for the Museum came from
the Scurry County Commissioners Court .
In
November 1971, a bond issue was passed by county voters to fund a
museum building on Western Texas College 's campus. The 14,350 square
foot structure cost $345,000, which is equivalent to $1,675,665 in
today's dollars. The building is owned and maintained by the College,
but the collections, functions, and operations are under the
jurisdiction of the Scurry County Museum Association.
Mission
The
Scurry County Museum in Snyder, Texas is dedicated to increasing the
knowledge and understanding of the history of Scurry County and the
surrounding area of the Southern Rolling Plains. Through an active
program of collections, exhibits, educational opportunities, and
special events, the Museum seeks to stimulate creative thought and
provide a sense of place, time, and space for residents of and visitors
to Scurry County.
The Scurry County Museum is
accredited by the American Association of Museums. It is among the
smallest to be accredited.
